Portrait of a Young Woman
Viggo Johansen (b. 1851 – d. 1935)
With broad and wispy stroke of the brush, Viggo Johansen excels at capturing emotions and personality. In Portrait of a Young Woman, Johansen effectively presents a pensive and contemplative young woman whose stare into the distance conveys a relaxed and thoughtful lady. His use of shadows and lighting are a hallmark of Johansen who often plays with lighting in candle-lit rooms. While bright colors are lacking in Johansen's work, his effective use of brown and black are presented in calming tones. He focuses on the facial expressions and depicts the background and clothing as impressionistic images with wide and quick strokes of his brush.
