Coastal View with Fisherman (1919)

Johan Jens Neumann (b. 1860 - d. 1940)

The Danish painters were fasciniated by northern skies and the unique pallets of blues and browns whcih seemed to change with every season.   In Coastal View with Fisherman, Neumann highlights the softer pastel colors of the sky and sea, which seem to gently blend into the dunes along the shoreline.

Denmark is tucked away in the northern coast of Europe.  It's northernmost tip is Skagen, where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea collide.  It's northerly location also provided the artists with unique lighting effects as the sun dramatically shifted between the Summer to Winter solstices.
