Seascape with Breakers, a Sailing Ship and a Steamer in the Distance (1910)

Christian Vigilius Blache (b. 1838 - d. 1920)

The seascapes from the 19th century are interesting to follow as they record the transition from the sails of the tall ships to the black smoke trails of the steamship. In Seascape with Breakers, a Sailing Ship and Steamer in the Distance, Blache captures this change by showing the steamship leading the way as the sailboat trails behind. We also recognize the challenges of sailing the North Sea as ships struggle against the cold winds, rough seas, and rocky shores as the tide pulls the shoreline away.
